“sunset on shelly island”

shelly island was a fleeting, sandy, magical little island which began forming around April 2017, as a sandbank here off the coast of hatteras island - located off the tip of cape point in buxton.
it was short-lived, but quickly became the place to go for finding epic treasures and chasing unreal sunrises and sunsets.
my husband and i made the journey there once, having to wade and swim from the tip of cape point to get there. we found more whole welk shells than we could carry, and stuck around for the most magical sunset, with the island all to ourselves. i’ll never forget it - and the memory is that much more special now that shelly island no longer exists.

this painting celebrates the spine-tingling sunset we were blessed with on that special evening on shelly island 💛
